Kayla Poulos, PE, Graduates from 2025 ACEC/NC Future Leaders Program

August 1st, 2025

RALIEGH, N.C – DRMP Design Lead Kayla Poulos, PE, has graduated from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC) Future Leaders Program, a seven-month experience designed to equip emerging professionals in the architecture and engineering (A/E) industry with strategic and collaborative leadership skills.

Targeted at professionals with at least five years of experience, the program offers interactive learning led by local and national business and A/E leaders. It combines business development, communication training, and legislative engagement to help participants expand their peer networks and deepen their understanding of the industry’s broader landscape.

“One of the biggest highlights for me was the opportunity to connect with peers across the state who are navigating similar challenges in our industry,” Poulos said. “Every session brought valuable insights, but what stood out most were the interactive discussions during the business development and contract law sessions. The real-world examples shared by speakers helped bridge the gap between theory and application.”

Poulos also cited Legislative Day as a key moment. This year’s session featured a lecture from a state representative and a networking event, unlike previous years when participants met directly with multiple legislators.

“It was eye-opening to witness how our profession intersects with policymaking,” she said.

A recurring theme throughout the program was adapting leadership and communication styles to different personalities, a takeaway introduced early and reiterated across sessions.

“Leadership isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach,” Poulos said. “Understanding how others prefer to communicate, make decisions, and engage allows us to serve our teams and clients more effectively. While these were concepts I was already aware of, revisiting them through the lens of peer collaboration and discussion was a valuable reminder.”

Poulos said the program also expanded her view of leadership beyond technical expertise and emphasized long-term strategy.

“It encouraged me to be more intentional in how I develop those on my team and how I think about long-term strategy for both my specific projects as well as DRMP companywide,” she said. “I’ve also become more proactive in engaging with industry organizations and committees.”

She encourages future participants to come with an open mind and a collaborative spirit.

“Come into the program ready to participate, not just observe,” she said. “The more you engage with your peers, the more you’ll take away from each session. Also, don’t underestimate the value of the relationships you build. We are all planning to stay in touch multiple times a year, and I’m confident that this peer network will continue to be a resource long after the program ends.”

Overall, the experience was an impactful investment in her growth, Poulos noted.

“It pushed me to think critically about my leadership style, helped me build a stronger statewide network, and gave me tools I can immediately apply in my role,” she said. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to participate and would recommend it to anyone looking to take the next step in their career.”

DRMP Chief Strategy Officer Jim Beck, PE, praised her ambition.

“Kayla’s initiative to grow her leadership skills and dedication continue to elevate not only her own work, but the entire team around her,” Beck said. “We’re proud to support her development and look forward to the positive impact she’ll continue to make at DRMP.”
