DRMP’s growing noise group plays a critical role in helping clients meet regulatory requirements, respond to community concerns, and deliver thoughtful, data-driven solutions that balance progress with livability. DRMP Noise Group Leader Robyn Hartz, INCE, shares how her team is expanding its capabilities, what distinguishes their work, and how they’re growing in this niche field.

Balancing the demands of motherhood with a successful career can often feel overwhelming, but with the right approach to work-life integration, it doesn't have to be. Work-life integration is about blending your work and personal life together, rather than trying to strictly keep them separate. It’s about creating a synergistic flow between both, so they support each other rather than compete with your time. This concept was at the heart of a recent "Coffee & Convos" virtual discussion hosted by the WTS Central Florida Chapter. 

In the next 12 to 24 months, the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) will unveil a newly constructed Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC), operated by DRMP. The RTMC will be DRMP’s first-ever staffed and operated center and will make Northwest Florida’s roads safer and less congested.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners recently passed a resolution declaring March 2025 as Bike Month in Lee County, Fla., reinforcing the importance of safer cycling and recognizing the contributions of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). DRMP Fort Myers Office Leader, Paul Benvie, PE, who serves on BPAC, was honored to be part of this initiative, which aligns with Florida’s Bicycle Month.  With 135 out of 160 sidewalk projects on the waitlist totaling over $150 million, BPAC's job is to make sure the County’s annual $5 million to $10 million sidewalk improvement budget is spent where it is needed most.

To enhance our data collection capabilities, DRMP has invested in a versatile UAV fleet to support a range of projects for our clients, including documenting construction progress with high-resolution photography and gathering dense LiDAR data in areas that are difficult to access by land or water. While UAVs do not replace traditional survey and inspection methods, they complement them and help our teams work more efficiently and safely.

The City of Tarpon Springs, Fla., is joining cities nationwide in prioritizing sustainability by exploring renewable energy sources, such as solar power, to combat climate change and lower energy costs. To support these efforts, DRMP is conducting a solar feasibility study to help Tarpon Springs assess and expand solar installations at multiple city-owned facilities.

In Tarpon Springs, Fla., DRMP designed four pickleball courts at Safford Fitness Park, one of the most requested amenities from residents eager to enjoy this popular and rapidly growing sport. This project revitalized the park by introducing well-lit pickleball courts and enhancing accessibility with improved pedestrian access and sidewalk connectivity.

DRMP’s Traffic Impact Analysis team goes beyond traffic studies to help clients navigate the approval process, address regulatory concerns, and ensure that transportation challenges don’t stand in the way of progress.

In celebration of World LiDAR Day on Feb. 12, we're highlighting how mobile liDAR technology is shaping the future of transit planning. With mobile liDAR, we’re surveying more than 200 bus stations in Raleigh, Durham, Concord, and Chapel Hill to determine if they have the room or right-of-way to construct bus lanes, bus shelters, ADA safety ramps, lighting, amenities, and signage.

Wetlands provide critical wildlife habitat and a healthy ecosystem, but development can harm them if not carefully planned. As a subconsultant to KZF Design, DRMP helped prepare infrastructure plans for Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Patrick Space Force Base, evaluating potential impacts on wetlands. World Wetlands Day, celebrated on Feb. 2, raises awareness of their importance.

In celebration of National Mentoring Month this January, we launched our mentoring program with a Mentoring Mixer – a chance to bring colleagues together, break the ice, and support opportunities for professional development.

The Indian River Lagoon, spanning 156 miles along Florida’s east coast, has been in an environmental crisis for years primarily due to nutrient pollution, which fuels toxic algae blooms, manmade hydrologic alterations, destruction of habitat, and overuse of its resources. . Serving as a consultant for the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, DRMP is designing a stormwater treatment facility to remove and treat macronutrients before they enter the Lagoon.

The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) needed a solution to modernize its road sign inventory on a stretch of US 19 in Braxton and Nicholas counties and identify signs that no longer meet regulatory standards. As a subconsultant to our sister firm, the Mannik & Smith Group, DRMP assisted with this project by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mobile LiDAR technology.

National Bird Day, celebrated annually on Jan. 5, honors the beauty and diversity of birds and their importance to our ecosystem, while raising awareness about the challenges they face. Organized by the Avian Welfare Coalition, the campaign sheds light on the bird trade, the harsh conditions of bird breeding mills, and ways to improve the welfare of captive birds.

The holiday season at DRMP is more than just a time for celebration. It’s a chance to give back to the communities we’re proud to serve. Every year, our employees come together to support local charities, spreading hope and joy to families in need through our DRMPCares program. DRMPCares focuses on creating meaningful, lasting impacts in STEM education, health, and supporting children in need through donation drives and volunteer efforts.

In 1991, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a regulation to control lead and copper in drinking water. This regulation is known as the Lead and Copper Rule (also referred to as the LCR). Since 1991, the LCR has undergone various revisions. In October 2024, the EPA issued a final rule requiring drinking water systems across the country to identify and replace lead pipes within 10 years, a step aimed at making America’s drinking water safer and cleaner for all consumers. DRMP’s Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) experts are ready and able to assist with pipe location and inspection to help clients meet the 10-year deadline. 

Raleigh's bustling corridors can make it tough for transit to stay on schedule, especially during peak traffic times. Along one of the busiest corridors in Raleigh – the intersection of Capital Boulevard at Calvary Drive – lined with three lanes in each direction, has always been a congestion hotspot and is a focus of the City’s Vision Zero program. The City of Raleigh selected DRMP to design a specialized solution—a queue jump lane at a critical signalized intersection. 

As we celebrate National GIS Day, DRMP’s GIS team has plenty to reflect on after a year filled with exciting projects and professional growth. From designing an application to display school zones for Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida to using LiDAR and GIS to enhance roadway safety, each team member has made an impact. Our year in review looks back at some of their noteworthy highlights and proudest achievements from the past year.

In North Carolina, employees in our Charlotte office came together to donate money and assemble hundreds of toiletry bags for victims of Hurricane Helene. Our General Civil Department volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando, Fla., to help fight hunger in the community. And several of our Orlando-based team members participated in the Making Strides Walk to End Breast Cancer, raising funds for the American Cancer Society to support lifesaving research and vital patient services.

In many predominantly Black rural towns and small cities across eastern and southern Arkansas, residents have faced ongoing flooding challenges for years. Compounding the flooding, these areas are typically economically disadvantaged, and limited resources combined with insufficient funding, hinder the efforts to improve the infrastructure needed to tackle these flooding problems correctly. DRMP actively contributed to efforts aimed at addressing these challenges through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations (WFPO) Program.

Led by an experienced and versatile group of professionals, DRMP’s Project Development and Environmental Services (PDES) team is equipped to tackle the most complex aspects of PD&E/NEPA and environmental compliance for a wide range of projects. With a focus on the transportation sector, we provide a variety of services, including public engagement, traffic noise studies, community impact assessments/environmental justice (EJ) analyses, wetland and stream delineations, endangered species surveys, and environmental permitting.  

For the US 601 Widening Project, a crucial link from US 74 to the Monroe Bypass, DRMP provided Surveying, Mapping, and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). This project stands out as one of our largest surveying endeavors in Union County, N.C., in recent years.

DRMP is honored to be a key player in contributing to the success of the I-40 widening project in North Carolina by providing construction services. Our team is collaborating closely with NCDOT to ensure thorough inspections throughout the project.

DRMP is advancing its Terrestrial Mobile LiDAR services with the latest technology to provide faster, more precise data collection and detailed imagery for a wide range of surveying and mapping projects.

Scott Garth, PE, LEED AP ND, recently ventured into flood-affected neighborhoods and other areas to document conditions for ongoing municipal and Florida Department of Transportation projects. These challenging site visits provide critical data, helping DRMP develop effective solutions for managing runoff and improving water quality. Accessing flooded areas can be risky, but this firsthand experience allows our firm to create infrastructure that improves public safety and quality of life.

In the wake of hurricane and severe storm devastation, FEMA's Public Assistance (PA) program will play a significant role in helping communities rebuild. A major change to the program on August 3, 2022, increased the threshold for Small Projects to $1 million, up from $139,800, making 99 percent of PA projects eligible for simplified procedures. This means faster FEMA funding with far less documentation required, and DRMP can assist clients with navigating through the process. 

The Sheppard Mill Road Bridge Replacement Project presented DRMP with a unique and challenging opportunity to provide a range of responsibilities, including preparing State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) environmental documentation and handling Section 6(f) coordination for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act.

DRMP's GIS team supports Hillsborough County Public Schools with innovative tools and data management solutions, streamlining school zoning, growth planning, and community engagement.

DRMP’s Environmental Services Group helps clients with environmental assessments, strategic management plans, and regulatory compliance for public lands. Our expertise ensures that projects like the Lake Moore Conservation Area are planned and managed to support conservation goals and recreational use while meeting legal requirements.

DRMP's multi-use path project along SR 30 (US 98) in Mexico Beach, Fla., focuses on enhancing community connectivity, supporting hurricane recovery, and integrating public input and environmental stewardship into its development.

DRMP’s traffic engineers are dedicated to creating safer and more efficient commutes for students, parents, and staff by delivering tailored traffic studies and management plans for schools nationwide.

The Women Surveyors Summit 2024, held in Pittsburgh, Pa., saw record attendance this year. DRMP Survey Analyst Melissa Padilla Cintron, SIT, had the opportunity to check off a long-time bucket list item during the summit, a dream she's had since her teenage years.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) selected DRMP for its statewide structures contract. This two-year contract encompasses the in-service inspection of existing bridges throughout North Carolina.

On June 28, 2024, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed SB 7040 into law, introducing new regulations to enhance water quality and stormwater infrastructure statewide. DRMP's experts are ready to assist clients in complying with these requirements with innovative engineering solutions that effectively address nutrient pollution challenges. 

In the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry, firms are harnessing the power of advanced gaming engines to design immersive walkthroughs and virtual tours of buildings and spaces. DRMP uses Beyond Typicals and Twinmotion real-time rendering software to bring its projects to life.

DRMP’s comprehensive plan will help safeguard Cedar Key against intense storms and hurricanes, specifically in the Dock Street business district – a bustling hub of shops, bars, and restaurants along Florida’s Gulf Coast.  

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day on June 23, DRMP celebrates its outstanding women engineers who are significantly impacting our communities and shaping the future. We express our gratitude for their invaluable contributions and for inspiring young girls to pursue careers in engineering.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) facilitated a statewide STEM Outreach Solutions program in Florida aimed at equipping K-12 teachers with valuable STEM resources. Pavan Paiavula, PE, and Ryan Pellarin, PE, CCM, leaders from DRMP and members of the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI) Class of 2024 assisted in securing funding and support for the program, which received significant backing from the Florida Department of Transportation.

At DRMP, we prioritize and encourage employee involvement in professional organizations as a key part of our business strategy. This commitment is reinforced during annual reviews in which we actively support staff in joining and participating in these organizations. As a result, our staff includes several talented professionals who hold leadership roles in the A/E/C industry, sharing their expertise and knowledge to support industry advancement.

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) has chosen DRMP as the prime consultant for the Districtwide High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) to Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Conversion Contract, which will convert 65.2 miles of roadway to modern LED lighting for Phase 1. This project marks the largest systemwide conversion in Florida and stands as DRMP’s most significant design accomplishment in our Traffic Department history.

In Hillsborough County, Fla., DRMP has taken the lead as the prime consultant for a condition assessment of the county’s critical stormwater pipes. Together, with subconsultants AREHNA Engineering, Inc., and Keystone Civil, Inc., we are inspecting more than 860 pipes and leveraging our GIS capabilities to streamline the process. 

The Spruce Creek Country Club, a retirement community of 3,250 homes between Gainesville and Orlando, Fla., hired DRMP to oversee on-going property management required by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to protect threatened species and habitat.

During this week-long celebration, we recognize the vital role that engineers play in shaping our world, from designing innovative infrastructure to solving complex challenges that improve communities. 

The City of New Smyrna Beach hired DRMP as the prime consultant to design the 5th Street replacement bridge. The new bridge design not only addresses current infrastructure challenges but also enhances the surrounding environment.

Since its recent merger with Ramey Kemp Associates (RKA), DRMP now offers Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) services and has a team of qualified professionals ready to conduct TIAs for projects throughout the United States.

DRMP’s proficiency in Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) played a pivotal role in providing safe access to the nearly 100-acre Grove 98 project, which features a 100,000 square-foot Wegmans grocery store, restaurants, retail space, and luxury apartments and townhomes.

As DRMP expands its service offerings in South Carolina, the firm has secured its first major CEI project as a subconsultant to RK&K for the South Carolina Department of Transportation's Midlands Connection Project. 

Understanding the importance of noise abatement in federally funded transportation projects, particularly in states like Florida with substantial growth, involves thorough evaluation during the preliminary planning stage. Our goal at DRMP is to ensure stakeholders, including homeowners, schools, churches, and playgrounds, are not negatively impacted by increased traffic and expanded roadway capacity through our noise analysis services. 

DRMP's employees join hands during the holiday season to give back to their communities. 

DRMP is providing ongoing environmental services for the proposed Lake Apopka Trail as a subconsultant to WBQ. Our firm is providing environmental permitting services, wetland and surface water assessments, and threatened and endangered species surveys.  One of the more interesting aspects of this project was surveying the proposed new trail limits for the presence of the state and federally protected sand skink (Neoseps reynoldsi).

DRMP's Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) experts overcame significant challenges while mapping underground utility lines for the extension of Jacksonville Electric Authority's (JEA) downtown chilled water facilities.

DRMP employees, some of whom lost loved ones to cancer, banded together to support cancer research by participating in the annual Miles for Moffitt 5K race in Tampa, Fla. 

Embracing change is essential to the growth and success of any business, particularly in the A/E/C industry where demand is outpacing the experts needed to perform the work, and corporate social responsibility to the community is a high priority. In 2023, DRMP embraced and implemented key changes companywide.
 

The Downtown Main Street Streetscape Improvements project in Dunedin, Fla., undertaken by DRMP as the prime design consultant, transformed the pedestrian experience in the heart of the city by reconstructing sidewalks, adding landscaping and lighting, and addressing ADA non-compliance. 

DRMP collaborated with Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) to enhance the Morton Salt Plant redesign by leveraging DRMP's LiDAR expertise and geographic proximity. 

DRMP takes cybersecurity seriously and is continuing to invest in the best technology and staff to protect the firm's data, as well as employee and client information. 

Built in 1964 for cargo and passenger trains commuting on the Orange Belt Railway, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) demolished the West Orange Trail trestle style bridge and replaced it with a more modern but similar looking bridge designed by DRMP.

North Carolina’s corporate tax rate, the lowest in the United States, coupled with being a “right-to-work” state is attracting big manufacturing plants to the state, providing the area with an economic boom and DRMP with opportunities to showcase its Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) capabilities.

DRMP and its Trilon partner firm, CPH, are collaborating on designing a 36-acre park in Parkland, Fla., which will contain a wide variety of amenities and include elements unique to a public park. 

At DRMP, companywide team building comes in many forms, from annual cornhole tournaments, ping-pong competitions, food truck extravaganzas to Enneagram personality inventory activities and a charity bike build event to benefit local children and families in need.  

As DRMP’s new PD&E Division Leader, Joce Pritchett, PE, is taking the firm’s PD&E/NEPA services to new heights. Pritchett has 32 years of experience providing comprehensive Project Development and Environmental (PD&E) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) services throughout the Southeastern United States. Her goal is to build a multi-state, full-service team of PD&E/NEPA experts across all DRMP service areas to better serve clients.   

DRMP's SR 390 Widening project in the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District 3 won an American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL) Outstanding Project Award for how the project aided the community in the recovery after a Category 5 hurricane struck in 2018.

The SR 597/Dale Mabry Highway improvement project in Hillsborough County, Fla., received the Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) Construction Project of the Year Award. This project is a prime example of smooth and successful collaboration among all involved. 

More than 50 employees from DRMP and Trilon family partner firm, CPH, volunteered their time for a companywide Charity Bike Build on July 28 to assist families supported by The Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families in Orlando, Fla.

DRMP's design of a new water control structure for the City of Palm Coast provides an upgraded water control system and keeps the public safer during a storm. The new water control system will allow the City to draw down water levels quicker from its canal system ahead of a severe storm.

The FIG Working Week 2023 conference, held in the United States for the first time in more than 20 years, comes at a critical time for surveyors to gather and share knowledge and recruitment strategies as the industry in the United States and abroad faces a shortage of young surveyors joining the profession.
 

DRMP is celebrating success in strategic growth, which saw employees advancing to leadership roles, the firm expanding into new regions, and impactful project and community involvement collaboration opportunities.

Giving back to our communities, whether it’s through charitable donation drives or volunteering our time to share our knowledge and expertise, is at the heart of the DRMPCares program. 

Florida’s municipalities and transportation agencies are increasingly turning to roundabouts to improve traffic safety and congestion and reduce vehicular collisions. In fact, Florida ranks No. 1 with more roundabouts than any other state in the country, according to a 2022 Washington Post roundabout report. 

The Certified Survey Technicians (CST) certification is one way in which DRMP is investing in its surveying and mapping staff. The certification provides a career ladder to field technicians who want to advance their careers in the surveying and mapping industry.  

In 2019, DRMP entered into a continuing services contract with the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) to monitor and manage more than 365 traffic signals in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and provide enhanced traffic operations, traffic engineering, and transportation planning.

DRMP, in partnership with AVCON and prime consultant OTIE, led the design effort for the 10,000-foot runway replacement at the Ascension Island Auxiliary Airfield, which is jointly operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the U.S. Space Force (USSF). The airfield supports military and space missions, as well as limited commercial flights.

As part of the 5th Street Bridge replacement project in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., DRMP's Environmental Services Division designed a living shoreline and relocated oyster beds and mangroves in the project area to approximately 3 acres of wetlands to mitigate impacts associated with the bridge replacement.

DRMP had the honor of providing construction engineering inspection (CEI) services for the first and now second phase of the $276 million I-40/I-77 Interchange Improvement Project in Statesville, N.C. – an essential component of North Carolina’s highway system.

DRMP has invested in a new piece of equipment, the Teledyne Z-Boat 1800T (Trimble Edition), for its survey fleet that will potentially provide cost savings for clients, additional service offerings, and increased safety for the firm’s staff.

Nearly every business has a mission statement that is meant to reflect where it places its value and how it conducts business – but, without action, it rings hollow. What does it look like when a company’s mission statement goes beyond words?

DRMP’s innovative engineering is at the center of a proven life-saving initiative that has so far prevented more than 1,000 potential wrong-way driving incidents. The award-winning Central Florida Expressway Authority’s (CFX) Wrong-Way Driving Detection Program features the firm’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design, which detects wrong-way drivers in real-time.

DRMP is investing in STEM education and proactively participating in community outreach to inspire the next young generation to join the surveying profession. 

DRMP’s Environmental Services Division has partnered with the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Department of Biology, to conduct an 11-month wildlife utilization study to assess the effectiveness of the Suncoast Parkway 2 wildlife crossing structure.

DRMP is designing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for an $83 million North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) design-build project to widen I-485 in Charlotte. This 20-mile section of road will be a standalone expressway system that will be tied into the NCDOT/NCTA system. This is only the second expressway in North Carolina to have separated tolled express lanes.

In 2001, DRMP opened its Charlotte, N.C., “office” in the most unusual place – an employee’s attic. That employee? Jim Beck. Beck, PE, AICP, ENV SP, saw an opportunity to replicate DRMP’s success and work toward building a full-service firm in Charlotte, N.C. 

As DRMP focuses on strategic growth, its work on R-2828 - a segment of North Carolina Turnpike Authority’s $2.2 billion Complete 540 project - is a big step forward for the firm's Structures division and its entire North Carolina design team.  This effort is DRMP's largest contribution to a North Carolina design-build project to date. 

DRMP’s Surveying and Mapping/Geospatial Division established an in-house Surveying Training Center designed to teach foundational and resourceful knowledge to invest in the growth and development of its surveyors and staff.

Consistently ranked as a top Spring Break destination, private developers and the Community Redevelopment Agency for the City of Panama City Beach, Fla., were looking for opportunities to reshape the City’s reputation as a “party town.” That opportunity came in nearly 35 acres of underused land.

DRMP had the honor of working on the $135 million Segment 1 section of the three-phased project that spans Citrus and Hernando counties in Florida from US 98 to State Road 44.

The DRMP team remained dedicated to collaboration throughout the life cycle of the SR 528/SR 436 Interchange Reconfiguration project. This important interchange will continue to serve the Orlando International Airport as it welcomes millions of travelers to the Central Florida area.

As cities in our community expand, so does the need for connectivity. The Toms Bayou Bridge Replacement project in Okaloosa County, Fla., was an interesting yet challenging project that required some creative thinking to connect cities and communities.

To celebrate National Intern Day, DRMP’s Learning & Development Team welcomed its newest interns with a lunchtime tailgate party where they had a chance to connect with one another as well as full-time DRMP professionals who started at the firm as interns – and have fun while doing it.

Though Interstate 4 (I-4) serves its purpose of easing traffic flow for the state, it came at a heavy cost to its wildlife population. I-4 has become a barrier to wildlife movement in Florida, inadvertently causing a population reduction among a wide range of species. Now, there’s a plan for a solution.

There is so much more to the Titusville Causeway (Causeway) shoreline than meets the eye. Stretching along the Central Indian River Lagoon (Lagoon), the area is and was not only known for recreation for residents and tourists, but it has a special place in history as a viewing site for space shuttle launches dating back to the American Space Race in the 1960s.

It is a little-known fact in the A/E/C industry that DRMP has one of the largest and most comprehensive Structural Engineering Divisions in the Southeastern United States.

The work we earn via continuing contracts gives DRMP staff an opportunity to build trust with our clients and allows these relationships to grow stronger with time.

On Friday, February 22, 2019, a landslide occurred, dumping approximately 4-million gallons of rock and soil on Interstate 40, a major highway in the western part of North Carolina.

There is more to utility engineering than meets the eye. What you see above the ground—manholes, valve covers, and backflow prevention devices—may look pretty, but below the ground trouble may be brewing.

From Sept. 9-13, DRMP staff participated in a companywide DRMPCares Community Involvement Project. After spending time volunteering at several local Ronald McDonald Houses last year, DRMP knew that we would support this cause again in 2019—but we would make a bigger impact, preparing double the meals than we did last year.

Several years ago, DRMP leadership created a multi-generational committee that brainstormed ways to foster collaboration between each generation represented by our employees.

It is not every day that I get to be a part of a sidewalk project that makes history, but the University of South Florida’s (USF) National Pan-Hellenic Council’s (NPHC) Plaza at the university’s Tampa campus is both “monumental” and historical.

As cities in the United States continue to expand, the need for connectivity increases with it. The City of Orlando has made this need a priority by seeking to create safe, comfortable and interconnected pedestrian systems.

In 2016, DRMP was face-to-face with a challenging project, but providing surveying and mapping services on a remote island while dealing with a very tight deadline proved to be something we could not only tackle, but win an award for as well.
